Its coming to the time my Diff is on its last life in the VL.. it clunks when i put my foot into it, it grinds when its at about 3000rpm, it locks up and spins 2 wheels (its a single pegger) so im not expecting it to last 2 much longer, hell its lasted all this time! so im happy,

i was going to put a 28 spline VL Turbo LSD in it, as i was going to make it strong now for when i turbo it, but how much power can the VLT diffs withstand?

my goal is to be running 10 sec 1/4's so im guessing thats about 600-700rwhp?? (total guess correct me if im wrong)

can the VLT diff stand that mutch power? or will i have to go a ford 9" or something similar?

if the VLT diff wont do what i want later, i guess ill look for a 25 spline disk brake diff and put a LSD center in it. anyone know wat sorta money they are worth?

also what else needs to be changed when i change the rear to disk brake instead of drum.

any help will be appreciated

cheers

skyline diff for starters, then when ya put power into it a hilux diff would be a nice choice :)

I think the best way is not just to change the disk brake. It will also help to change the brake drum (http://www.racepages.com/parts/brake_drum.html) to be sure that the overall brake system is okay.

I have got a vl turbo rear end in my vb. It has been in there about 11 years. My memory is a little sketchy but I don't remember there being any alterations that had to be made.

You will be able to run a 10 with 400rwhp providing you have the right set up. Don't kid yourself though, it wont be cheap.

A standard VLT diff might be pushing it to run that much power. But it has been done before. I am using a VL diff in my HG with a 400ci, but that will have 31spline billet axles.

I would suggest you do the same. Get some good billet axles and get a good after market centre to go with it. I would suggest a Tru-Trac centre. They are a lot stronger then the standard centre, and will last a lot longer. Not cheap though, but if you want to go fast, it costs money.

The Housing won't matter as much as the center/axel combo.. 28 or 31 spline axels would be advisable and i don't have any experience with hilux diffs, but they seem to be fairly popular, either that or stick with the VL diff.. It's not gonna bend or break unless you're launching a heavy ass car on big slicks with loads of torque and a transbrake.

Of course you could go get a 9 inch housing, get it shortened up, fit fat axels/spool and never have to worry the strength again but thats your call. All costs $$$. you've gotta think about the future, i don't know what sort of person you are but when you start running 10's one would imagine they're gonna get boring after a while.. and if you think that's gonna happen to you then its best to do it right the first time, this goes for your trans too. However some people are quite content with sitting in the 10's/11's/12's and have no desire to go further, so if this is going to be a long build/transformation then a bit of planning and goal setting is in order i'd say :)

I'm building my HG to run 10's, and I'm using a VL diff for it. Its getting a stout 400ci with 4500rpm stalled Glide and 4.11:1 gears, and will be launching at 4500rpm on slicks.

you can run 31 spline axles with a full spool in them which is good for 700hp

Exactly what i am doing. Except im leaning towards the Tru-Trac over the spool. At least until it gets blown lol
