Hi Kent
I am having continuing problems with my sorst rattling via contact with either the body work or the rear axle. It's been happening for a few mths now but really starting to peeve me off atm. Not a problem at mid to high rev range though.
I dunno, it may even be the engine mounts wearing and allowing the engine to tilt more than normal under torque load. I kakked the original mounts about 12 mths ago and had a new more robust version fitted.
Do you guys do exhaust stuff as well as mechanical and performance work?
I ultimately want to change to a 3" Cats Back and swap to 4" Balistic Cats in 100 CPI - but the Cats back must be in Mild Steel as I keep cracking the Stainless versions at the hot end and centre muffler. I'm contemplating Ceramic Coat of the mild steel throughout as well (yeh I know its a different thought but thats the epitome of "custom" to my mind). As far the thermal quality and traits of ceramics related to flows and heat retention where it can be used/converted to an "advantage" makes sense to me. Someone needs to practically apply my theory, so I may as well become a Test Mule once again - no drone is a must though, so I assume a very high density centre muffler may be required...

Thermal coating exhaust components is nothing new, Somthing like HPC would be a good choice as it offers better flow as well as less radiant heat. The only downside is the cost, set of headders for a 4 banger will set you back around $200, so you would be expecting around the $1,000 mark to do a Dual 3" system.

Thanks Corey, I already have ceramic coated headers - same with the previous shorties I had on. Maybe just ceramic coat the pipes from cats to muffler up and including the muffler itself. Leaving the rear end uncoated which gives me no trouble.
I have a big sheet of thermal material / metal based (I got it from Holden a couple of years ago when I had a mind snap idea with the CAI). Thought I may see if I can get the muffler wrapped in this stuff - may not be possible due to clearance. Its the same material as those that are mounted in the super hot spots of the engine bay. This would be more to ensure that there is no drone whatsoever as the ceramic coat would keep heat dissipation reduced anyways. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

My competition pacemaker extractors got hpc coated as soon as they arrived and it is definately worth it, they look good (can be polished right up if wanted) and flow is improved etc.

Hey Pete,
The HPC coating isn't like the ones you wrap around the pipes. It is more like a paint that they dip the items into so it might be a better option if your having some issues with clearance.

Oh yeah its not a wrap as stated its like a paint that is applied thru various steps. The wraps are no good as they cause the pipes to rust.

Yeh mate I have had HPC ceramic coat on both sets of different extractors I put on the L98 to date; and also had the piping on my second CAI was HPC Ceramic Coated that I put on the VE early days; (now has a Ziggy OTR CAI so thats three to date) hence I do know what HPC and variants are LOL :).
The heat sheild/sound retardant stuff I have is just sitting in the shed doin nothing (still in the packaging). It would be at the muffler to further reduce sound intrusion into the cab - I actually like to have just a mild rumble in the cab - yeh old fart stuff lol..
Certainly will be going with HPC from cats up to and including muffler - that takes care of the heat and possible improved gas flow.
Then, maybe, just maybe, use this sound/heat insulation stuff (metal material) either around the muffler or simply mounted to the underbody of the car at that aproximate area to reduce sound intrusion into the car cabin area that may be created from a 3" system. Maybe its just overkill and a waste of time too??

The way I understand thing, I guess you better get a new exhaust that is why I recommend an ansa exhaust (http://www.racepages.com/brand/ansa.html) because I think it will fit in your car.
