Hi all
As most of you know I used to do skidpan about once a month through Slydewise at Gympie. Unfortunately for us Commodore owners there has been a complete overhaul of the Slydewise. The Skylines have been separated from the rest and given that the organiser owns a Skyline they have the lions share of the dates.
For me, you and whoever wants to participate, the below are the dates set for next year. The seven other dates set (not listed here) are for the skylines.
Mar 20 ~ Miss Fits (old Gympie crew and some other random cars)
May 29 ~ Maryborough Street Machines.
Jun 26 ~ Miss Fits
Jul 03 ~ Maryborough Street Machines.
Aug 07. ~ Miss Fits
Answers to some FAQ's and some advise...
1:Remove ALL crap from your car that is not actually BOLTED to your car.. paper, sub boxes, junk, tool boxes, lose crap. They fly round and wreck stuff!
2: Check your tyre pressures. I recommend you pump the REAR tyre pressure to the MAX as indicated on the sidewall of that tyre. DONT use SPINNERS!
3: You will need at least half a tank of fuel to go skidding for the day, depending on how thursty your car is and how heavy your foot is!
4: If your driving more than an hour to get to the skid pan, plan a rest somewhere on the way home, It may save your life.. its a long day!
5: Check ALL fluids, dont overfill ANYTHING.
6: Dont come skidding if your car has a mechincal issue, you may break it.. ..and that sux!
7: If you want to get better at skidding, LISTEN to the instructor..!
8: If your a newbie.. thats cool. Dont worry if you dont get it all together the first skid day.. it takes time and practice! Just ask Toddlls!
9: You dont need a helmet, special licence or special tyres. Just bring your normal car as you normally drive it..
10: If you want to go skidding, ask somebody (crew cheif!)
RULES
01: Do not skid past or near a car or person.. EVER. Dont skid when people are picking up cones. This is VERY bad, you will be sent straight home.
02: Do not spin tyres ANYwhere but on the skid pan.
03: Drive off the skid pan slowly.
04:Cool down laps on the black stuff is fine, consider other drivers, no overtaking, 40KM/h speed limit.
05: This is NOT drifting. Drifting involves tyre smoke and close car proximity. We dont do either.
06: All vehicles MUST have a full exhaust.. including mufflers. Sound limits do apply.
07: Pick up your own cones in your skid go, not after your go.
08: Seatbelts must always be worn, keep all of your body INSIDE the vehicle.
09: Only the nominated driver (who signs the indemnity form is permitted to drive.
10: Refrain from smoking near the shed and other cars. Especailly Aaron (skid BOSS)
11: No alcohol, drugs or HANGOVERS are permitted!
12: Your friends are your responsibility, They get asked to leave, so do you!
13: Dont break my rules, play nice or you and your mates WILL be evicted.
Use your common sence, and everybody will have a great day!
To find the Roadcraft facility, search google maps for: "Pronger Prd Gympie"
You will see the bitumen circuits and off to the right is the skid pan.
At SlideWize I try and encourage drivers (like yourself) to explore the limits of their skills in a safe, controlled environment.
Then, when you run out of tallent, you can seek help and get the good oil from people who know what your problem is, know how to fix it and explain why it is a problem!
If you return for a few more skid days, and you take notice, you will see that we encourage smoothness, precision and finesse. We allow you as much latitude as possable to have fun in the mornings, then rein you in over the day.. by the time you leave, you will be thinking about what you and your car are doing, which should start to shape you into a better driver.
In order to get things working at the skid pan, we need to get your eyes working. By that, I want you to draw a line along the path (skid circuit) where you would like to drive your car. This line is kind of like a GPS line for your brain to work with, get your eyes to draw the path with your primary vision, and your periphial vision will take car of the rest. It feels a bit odd at first, but it does work. It works very well! This will drasticly increase your ability to drive.. Once that starts to happen, then we can work on your foot control.
Foot control is the next big step for most people. Anytime a driver is stabbing the throattle, it unbalances the car and makes it a lot harder to steer. Drivers who stab the throattle often find that they are really having to work the steering wheel to prevent the car from spinning out. By gently appling the power, then more power.. the car slowly comes out sideways and is so much easier to hold in a nice smooth slide. This booth looks great and feels awesome.
Once your back on the road, practice your smooth throattle inputs, and be smooth on the steering wheel, you will notice you save fuel, tyres and time!
You can practice most of the skidding techniques..(not the actual skididng) Squeeze the throttle on slowly, dont jump on it. Lift off very lightly to slightly adjust the cars speed.
Ever so gently apply light brake pressure to pull the car up to start with, then softly apply more pressure once the weight has shifted. This will give more grip to the front tyres which do most of the braking. Softly pull the steering wheel so you dont 'jolt or jerk' the car into and around a corner. By pulling the car slowly into the corner, it allows the car time to move its weight onto the outside tyre and plant it, which will give maximuim grip.
Do all this for some time, and suddenly when you get on the loud pedal in a time trial (or race track), you will find yourself some what faster yet still very smooth and in full control. Tyres will have more grip everywhere, which will give you more confidence to drive even faster.
Now for the details on the SlideWize Prizes:
Time trial is built into the day, you get to drive it twice, so, there are 2 lots of points up for grabs for the time trail. A set of points each time it is raced.
The shoot out is a very short race between 2 cars around a figure '8' (or similar) circuit and back into a car park.
Time trial points are:
place- Points:
1st-25
2nd-20
3rd-17
4th-15
5th-13
6th-10
7th-8
8th-6
9th-4
10th-2
11th- and below get 1 point for trying.
Shoot out:
1st-11
2nd-7
3rd-5
4th-3
5th place and lower get 1 point for trying.
So, if you are super fast, you could win both time trials @25 points a hit = 50points, and you could win the shoot out = 11. So, there is a possable 61 points available. Back in the real world, say you get 5th in the first time trail =13 points. and say you get 3rd in the second time trail =20 points. Then you come 3rd in the shoot out = 5 points. This would give you a days total of 28 points.
I am wanting your club to nominate a 'crew cheif' (some body who has a mobile phone and internet) to organise car numbers and payments. That way, I get ONE payment, 14 days prior to the skid date. It also allows a smoother flow of information back and forth.
Payments:
NAB
A J Drew
BSB: 084691
ACC: 832519534
That covers most of it..
For anymore info or explanation of ANY of the rules, please feel free to ask.
Cheers
Aaron
