View Full Version : DBA rotors
Hi guys, was just wondering if anyone has fitted some DBA slotted rotors to their car but retained the standard calipers and pads? If so, is there any noticeable braking performance gains from just the rotor upgrade??

i stuck DBA slotted rotors onto my V6 VY wags. It was a noticable difference for me as my other rotors were warped

i put them on my vt wagon with standard calipers and beter pads
the only real differance i noticed was that if the wife had been driving for a while the brakes seemed to glaze up (read as drives too slow), i could give the brakes one good stab and they would clean staight up
and work great again

ps i always found the bigest diference was pads
Thanks guys, so maybe the rotors along with some quality pads would do the trick then.

and don't forget some good fluid :)

i put the vt upgrade on my vn, all i used where DBA gold series that where slotted and crossed drilled, with a set of TRW pads rated to 650'C, when they where cold it was a bit scary, but once they got up to temp, they stopped bloody hard, you would go thru the window if you didnt have your seat belt on.
my point is, all you really need is a set of decent pads, rotors and decent brake fuild, not stuff that has been in the car from factory. and you will notice a big difference.

slotted rotors will generally give the brake pads more bite, downside is they tend to wear pads quicker. They also perform better under heat, as the slots are designed to allow the hot gasses generated in the pads to escape easier
Picked up a full set of slotted rotors for the Monaro today...Look forward to getting them on the car now, will be interesting to see if theres any noticeable difference between these and the standard brakes..Got new pads to go with them too..

I don't think you will be disappointed. I have used DBA 4000 Slotteds for quite a whilse now. As indicated above posts it depends on the main body of work your cars sees. If track or fast stuff, then you will definately need upgraded pads to handle the heat (be sure to balance the temp variability with pad coeficient/grip - Pads are one of the most important parts of good stopping power within a humungous heat environment; and actually aid heat dissipation). Then you will also need friggen good Race type synthetic brake fluid to stop the fuid boil/deterioration factor (mainly in the lower end part of the lines). Once the fluid boils expect pedal to the floor results from your brake pedal - it feels very much as if you have air in the brake lines.
All things considered, its a very worthwhile project even with stock size rotors and calipers.
Safety First - good brakes are an imperative!!!
If you just did rotors alone I wouldn't think you would see much improvement at all. Rotors are just a circular piece of hellishly tough piece of metal on which the pads and all other bits work to clamp on to rapidly reduce inertia and built up kinetic power in motion, hence produces a by-product in that of HEAT - base physics stuff. In this scenario the DBA rotors may cool quicker because of the Kangaroo Paw design but without associated good pads, calipers, fluids etc. it's almost the status quo of stock - albeit possibly some part of bling in having slotted "look"..
Care when bedding in the pads.... I have smoked the begeesus out of a set of track based pads by picking a big long steep hill at Tamborine and riding the brake to bed in and burn off resin. Not the way to go I can assure you.

Thanks for the info Pete..Don't think the car will see any track work, I've mainly gone with them more so for a bit of a safety upgrade. We all seem to do the go fast mods but the poor old brakes tend to get overlooked sometimes. Suprisingly it was the missus who suggested a bit of brake work, to which I replied I'll have them fitted when it goes in for the diff gears...:)
Well I've got the brakes in the garage now, just need to decipher all the guff on diff gears to decide what ratio to go...3.7's or 3.9's seems to be the popular choice..
Cheers

Well all the people that go 3.7 say they would go 3.9 if they did it over again and no one that go 3.9 say they would go 3.7 :)
