i was about to start a similar thread, asking what oils they use and reccomend

i used to be a casterol man, GTX all the way, but recently i've heard many bad things.

I'm going to be putting royal purple in at the next service.

yeh have been told by many mechanic's with over 30yrs experience to stay away from castrol, dont even use it in the mower, didnt really beleive it until i saw the results, now i wont even touch castrol *shudders*

out of the 5 mechanics i know ( 2 performance mechanics ) they all have roughly 30yrs in the trade each if not more and they all say roughly the same thing, if you want an everyday oil use Mobil fully synthetic/penrite or shell, if you want performance use royal purple

a lot of these oil tests, have hidden agendas.... i wouldn't take them as gospel. Better off speaking to other people about their own experiences.

Personally, I've used Castrol Edge in my cars for years, low oil consumption, internals in my current engine look like new after over 60,000kms, quiet engine operation. I don't really care if it loses a few kw on the dyno compared to some other oils. There are far more important criteria when deciding on engine oil as far as I'm concerned like it's protective & cleaning properties

steet commodore did a test on oils. the synthetics fared the best. from memory i think royal purple did the best of them. they did state that their test was not scientific, that was most probably to cover their own backsides

when i got my motor built was told use shell helix plus (bluish bottle) and have heard that from many well known builders, with the alloy motors im not sure haven't really experienced much all i know is i use Valvoline as it was the only off the shelf oil with the rating advised from the manual

so now one knows what other fluids are in there car lol

Brake fluid: DOT 4, no real choice there unless ya go full berth raceing fluid
Transmission Fluid: still no real choice, but additive such as Lucas anti-slip is always good
P/S fluid: again no real change, can get high boil point stuff, but meh?
Engine oil: been discussed up der in other posts :) ^^^^^
Diff oil: still no real change from factory recom. again, can go racing stuff but why bother?
washer bottle: water with bug & tar remover is usually pretty good
Radiator: a suitable anti-corrosion, anti-boil (and anti-freeze if you make thoes trips down south, but your in Queensland so no use ) check out your commodore manual and check for recommended use, then work off that
indercator fluid: tinker bell dust works well.....

used dishwashing liquid for many years. about a teaspoon full or less. does as good a job as any thing else I have used. lot cheaper as well
