a question was asked in the recent Top Gear Australia about "why new cars have darker tinted rear windows"

and i was thinking, are we actually able to make the rears darker than the front? or is there a limitation to how dark we can go on those too...

you cannot tint the front screen & T35 is the darkest tint that is legal.
However I'm not aware of anything that dictates that all windows must have the same tint rating

there is a rule about imported cars that get tinted at the factory
that allows them to have darker tint than what the rest of us can have

Kev, my 300ZX had T10 on the Rear hatch and rear quter windows, as I was advised by a QT inspector at the time that It was ok as long as my fronts where T35 or less, and I had 2 side mirrors.

Come to think of it, my VL Exec had T20 on the rear window and that was ok aswell.... As having those tints on the rear window would be not much differant to having a rear luver.

if those imported cars have a factory tint that is darker than T35 and they were correctly compliance plated with that tint, then it would be acceptable.
However apart from that all tinted windows must not be darker than T35 - it's in the vehicle safety standards. Once again what is legal and what you may get away with are another thing. We (QT inspectors) keep a T35 tint card with us that we can check the tint with. If it doesn't pass the test it gets a defect. However to be totally unless it's fairly obvious, I don't bother

Thanks guys...

the main reason i asked is, i think it would be good for the daughter if i had something darker on her windows....

what would be the difference between getting a darker tint and getting one of these window socks?? (besdies the price)

I hate it. My wife's Outlander has factory tinted glass (not tint) on the rear and clear on the front. It has something to do with what they are allowed in Japan. We were then told that the window tint they put on the car would never match the rears.

A mate of mine up the sunny Coast has a tinting business and he did a couple of my cars. He would only use the darkest legal tint on the side windows but did a slightly darker tint on the back window which created the effect of the side ones being darker than they actually were, due the lesser amount of light going into the car from the rear window. I guess if you got pulled over you'd still have to hope they only checked the side windows, which would pass of course...
