not sure how much re-gassing costs these days, but if you have lost gas out of the system then you have a leak...... that's usually the expensive part to fix

it still works, just very weak,.... so i figured it just needs re gassing....

that's usually the first signs of a leak. Make sure you get them to run a leak detector over the system.

generally A/C systems shouldn't consume gas and the gas doesn't lose it's effectiveness over time unless your drier is full of moisture and/or dirty - in which case it will also need replacing. If you are low on gas, chances are there's a leak. It might be a slow leak which will take a couple of months to empty again, but it will get worse as time goes on.

Yeah Darrens spot on Ben. Contrary to popular belief A/C systems don't lose gas unless it's leaking...Think of it this way..your car A/C system is not much different to the system in your fridge at home, well similar in the way they work to a degree...Now, how many times have you had the fridge guy come to your home to give it a regas?..none I would suspect, unless of course it has a leak..On another note, technically it's illegal I believe to simply do a regas and not fix any obvious leaks...Not 100% sure on that though, maybe Darren knows for sure..

you are right, I had to go through the R134a accreditation when I was a mechanic, and they did stipulate that it was an offense (EPA) to regas a system if the repairer has not checked and repaired leaks as necessary.

yeah Ben, just wanted to prepare you for what might turn out to be more than a simple regas. Although it is law to search for and repair any leaks, a lot of A/C places just regas if that's all you ask for. So make sure you ask them to check for any leaks if the gas is low otherwise you'll probably be back in the same situation in a couple of months time. And yup I totally agree with you about having A/C. I'm planning to get mine up and going even on the VH. I'm getting too old not to have A/C :p I've got the VR compressor mounted, new condensor fitted, and evaporator swapped over from my previous VH. Just got to do some wiring from the ECM side of things, get some hoses made up and gas it.

On a side note.... did you know that overexposure to R134a gas can make you sterile ?

after having my rodeo at the pannel shop
it came back with the air con no where near as cold as it had been
i put up with it for a few years before finaly geting it checked
i thought it may just nead more gas
found out it had too much gas not leting the pressure drop enough to cold
the air con guy was amazed it had not damaged the compresor
wish i got it fixed back when i first realised there was something wrong
all those hot summer days:mad:

I when and saw Glenn today he is still ok for 10% off for BCCC members.
A bit out of your way Ben up to you.
I got my air con repaired before I met Glenn at a different place.
My car needed regas too so I thought but a leak was found as other people have said above.
New aftermarket condenser
Receiver drier which should be replaced at every two servicers or so I think.
A pipe don`t know which one.
Flush system over night with some sort of fluid???
$525
I think I got a small discount on parts.
But if you want cold air a good service is needed I think.

yeah if the system is overgassed, the high pressure switch (designed to protect A/C components from overpressure) will switch the A/C off when it reaches a specified pressure. Overgassing is usually the result of repairers filling by capacity rather than watching the pressures.
