Guys

I have just had a phonecall from Queensland Raceways about the All Aussie Day that we attended at Lakeside last year. We have been given two dates to choose from or we can have both. The XR Club and the Ford Turbo club have already agreed to both dates and I would like to do the same.

So the dates we have are 22 Apr and the 2 Sep. Is everybody interested. Would like to look at making this one of BCCC’s major April events. We do have an event on the weekend prior but that should not matter.

Once again, the club, will pay the $200 to do attend the event. I’ll put up the events in the calendar also when I get the further info

Happy laps does nothing for me. When we went to Lakeside I had hoped to learn something about the intricacies of the track and was unable to do so. If we do attend it will be as spectators.

CalaisRider

Yeh keith IMO its pretty boreing as you go full throttle up the straight for not sure what reason, then you lope around the actual fun corners at bugger all kph. Thats why I have never participated previously, but I can't form a true opinion unless I have a go at it. Seems pretty whoosy to me as its a 200 metres sprint and slug from there on in. Seems the yungins love it. Same as Powerplay, makes no sense to me as its just such a short run of full throttle, then back off for the fun curves and stuff that I do with Time Attack and Time Attack. To each their own I suppose.

Darren

it is a bit frustrating, but still fun.

I understand it's mainly just meant to be a bit of a spirited run around the track, but just wish the guys who don't want to attack the corners would keep to the left so the rest of us can go around them. Last happy laps day I had cars 2 abreast driving at grandma pace around the corners and then belting it down the straight. I didn't quite have the legs to pass them down the straight, but got stuck behind them on the corners.

I guess a little courtesy from participants would make it more enjoyable for all. Not sure what the attraction of the circuit is if you only want to punch it down the straights. Can do that at Willowbank almost any weekend. It's almost criminal to drive slowly around corners at a racing circuit!

fx160

Pete I have fun around the whole track
As I also find it pretty boring just doing a bit of a sprint at the start of the straight
Even though it ment I got kicked off before the session finished
It was still a lot more fun than little sprints

jamesmp

I've generally got my foot on the floor the whole way around the track. It's called a race track for a reason! You don't go our for happy laps with the intention of conserving fuel. :-P

Darren, are you allowed to go quick around the corners/curves or are you stifled to just running fast down the straights alone? Honestly I am quite confused about this bit.

hey Pete,
yeah it is kind of confusing as to where the line is drawn. I guess it shares a lot of similarity to a powercruise 'cruise' session. Put it this way, no helmets are required and you can bring passengers, so it's not intended to be race pace. They aren't saying you can't attack the corners, however the cornering speeds are entirely dictated by the pace of other drivers in front of you and whether they are courteous enough to give you room to pass.

during the drivers brief at the last 'happy laps' day, they advised there are no speed limits as such, but reminded us that it wasn't intended as a flat out sprint session either. They asked people to be patient toward slower cars and advised against excessively dodging and weaving in and out of other cars. I believe Keith was kicked off for too much dodging/weaving ? Unfortunately that was the only way you could get past some of the the slower traffic....

Put it this way, it is a fun day providing you realise it's not a sprint session. I'd definitely recommend having a go, it's a cheap day out afterall. But if you get too frustrated..... not that I'm suggesting you will :D then you always have the option of pulling into the pits and watching the show. I'm a little undecided myself at this point in time, I did enjoy the last one, but I'm kind of like yourself - once I get on a racetrack, I can't resist putting the hammer down and going for it for the entire lap :D But when you get other cars driving miss daisy style through the corners and blocking the entire track in the process, it can get rather frustrating to say the least. There isn't really much track etiquitte.

but like I say, give it a go and if you don't like it just park it up and watch the show. It's a good day out either way!

Carbon

Look at Powerplay like this. Generally everyone kind of lines up against another car for a drag. I did this but I also got out of the 'pairings' people were creating and actually attacked the inner corners a few times.

Basically, if track traffic allows you to go quick through corners then do so. At last Lakeside event I went quick up through the carousel a number of times

No matter what the overall idea is...it's just plain fun and if your attacking the corners and opening her up on the straights...I suppose its our own interpretation of Happy Laps BCCC Style :thumbs up:

Either way I am so looking forward to it as Lakeside is far more fun than QR and far more interesting track to drive.....get's the little grey cells working

Umm, I'll default to the experts (not me). I thought that these types of events only allowed you to go fast for a 200 metre or so blast along the straight/s, then you had to slow down and go slow for the curves until the next section of straight you can blast along. As I understand it the curves and corners are out of bounds for going fast for the full circuit - akka Powercruise Rules. I believe thats what differentiates Time Attack and Track Attack from the Happy Laps diciplines...

I'm sure someone here will clarify for us.

Pete

As far as i was aware, so long as you stay on the track and there's no cars in front or beside u, its game on :) that's what i do any ways :) But there aren't many of those opportunities as not everyone takes on the corners so u must allow for traffic. Where as in a time attack it would be game on for everyone at the start.

lol I like that one. Powercruise rules. It would be easily mistaken to think that is what the rules are at Powercruise. Unfortunately, the only reason why you have to go slow at Powercruise is because everyone is slowing down to race down the straights. The speed limit is 80 (which is of course slow for a race track) unless "between the cones", but your flat out getting to 30 on most corners lol

Just a reminder for those wishing to cruise out to Lakeside, we are meeting with the XR Club at Toombul carpark near McDonalds from 7am with a departure time of 7:30 sharp.

We will be travelling along the Gateway, over to the Bruce Highway heading onto Dohles Rocks Road Exit, straight up Dohles Rocks Road, through the traffic lights near the water tower and onto Narangba Road. We will then head into Lakeside via the back entrance to Lakeside which avoids the road adjoining the golf course.

Carbon
20-04-2012, 07:18 AM
The particular route into Lakeside itself was chosen for a certain reason which is to keep cars away from the golf course. We decided on this route after discussion with the Ford guys. On our last visit we had people going both ways.

To ensure we arrive as a group in force, could you please make sure you follow the car in front and follow the route as outlined.

Cheers

OK all, here is the low down for tomorrow:

Everyone is to meet at Toombul with the XR Club at 7am for a 7:30am sharp departure. For anyone who is travelling directly to Lakeside, gates open at 7:30am.

I can't upload the schedule nor the parking map as the files are too big for this forum so please see below:

Parking:

BCCC has pit #'s 100 to 120. This is where we were last year right next to the Control Tower. On the Designated Parking Areas form, BCCC has been allocated P1 parking area next to the Hall however I have discussed with the Falcon GT Owners Club to swap as they have more vehicles. When you arrive, head to the control tower and i'll be there waiting. So far we have 16 cars according to the RSVP in the calendar. We've been allocated 20 spots so if we do get more cars than 20, we will discuss this with officials as I am certain we could grab some more space around the place.

Schedule:

7:30 Gates Open
8:30 Cruise Briefing & Preparation
9 - 9:30 Open Early Bird Cruise
9:45 Commodore Car Club
10:00 EH & EJ Holden Car Club
10:15 XR6 Turbo Forums
10:30 XR6 & XR8 Club Qld
10:45 Car Club
10:30 Drivers Briefing for the Lakeside Challenges
11 - 12 XR6 Turbo Slalom an True Street Drags
12 - 12:30 Lunch - Trophy Presentation
12:30 - 1:15 Major Open Cruise
1:15 - A9x Torana & Qld Torana Car Clubs
1:30 Gasolin Car Club
1:45 Falcon GT Owners Club
2:00 True Street Car Club
2:30 - 3 Late Open Cruise session

PLEASE NOTE: BCCC, XR6 Turbo Forums and XR6 & XR8 clubs will be cruising together giving the three clubs a total of 45 minutes track cruise time.

Track Challenge is limited to 40 entrants and it's a first in basis. When you arrive, if you want to attend this event please head to the control tower and sign up.

For those who have them, bring your radios. For those who don't, we'll judge by the smile on your face what sorta time you're having!

Let's make this day a success and have a great time!

thanks Adam, Scott & the XR guys & gals.
And thanks to everyone who showed up today. I think there was 15 BCCC cars ? What a great showing, was a proud moment once again for BCCC.

once again a very enjoyable day out. Good to meet a few new members again, sorry I'm hopeless with remembering names so I won't attempt to post them up. But you know who you are. And Rob yep it's great when all that work pays off. Your car was at home on the racetrack. Congrats, make sure you come along to our next track day. It's twice the fun again.

I didn't get too carried away with the camera today, but got a few photos of the group parked in the pits.

I second that. These happy laps sessions are fun, but only a teaser.
Shane from the XR Club is already planning a possible combined XR & BCCC track day in September. Last couple of XR track days I've been to have been awesome.

Also Pete (Calaisrider) and myself are planning on trying out the QR sprint days - some other BCCC guys are keen too I believe. They run regular sprint days at both Lakeside and QR. They organise the sessions so that beginners are with beginners and the faster stuff is together. So it should be a good place to learn the craft without feeling any pressure to push beyond your comfort zone.

Yes once my routine settles I plan on a few mid week track days... I get updates from the champion guys and one day soon I will be out there testing myself out...

We missed out on our combined track day with the XR guys last year because we simply couldn't get the numbers.

Basically, if you want to go, you have to commit. Unfortunately we just couldn't get enough to commit.

^ like Adam said.

I get the feeling we've got a lot more members now who might have the circuit sprint bug this time around!

So yeah guys, when we start asking for numbers/comitment, please put your name down and stick to that commitment. Ask anyone who even went out for the happy laps today, it really is an experience you'll never forget. In fact it usually becomes an addiction once you've tried it!

I want to commit myself to a proper track day but can't. For a long time now I have wanted to go and work on a job that is either 4-1 or a 3-1 roster. Perhaps it won't happen but I can't take the chance. As a result of this I can't commit myself. The last thing I want to do is put my name down for an event and then pull out. Many years ago I on few occasions raced a mk 2 jag and had a ball. Sorry but happy laps apart from saying I have driven around Lakeside and QR did nothing for me. Flat out down the straight and around the corners like nanna would drive is not for me. Each to their own.

Carbon

I know some people work away and on rosters Keith. And I completely understand. I did once as well.

But, the last time I tried to help Shane organise it, we let people have up to a month to the event to sign up. Plus, the event was like to 6-8 month in advance. So, it gave people heaps of notice plus as cutoff was a month prior it meant people on rosters etc would have known if they could make it.

I will admit that I think the real reason is that the last few track days have been weekdays. I understand this is a hassle for some (I dont get paid if I dont get to work so I know how it feels) but with enough planning etc it can all work. Thats what I mean by commitment mate. I know you have it in buckets when it comes to this place. If you(as in anybody) plan for it then we get more committed numbers and then we can get the track day. The reason its on during the week is beacuse it is half the price for double the amount of time (compared to weekend).

The bug has bitten and I'm in.....as for cornering like a Nanna.....lol when the track was clear I certainly wasn't a Nanna :-) the car was set up for race mode and it has now given me a taste of just what it can do and I'll be on the track again

Yeh I was in for the Lakeside Sprints on the 29th, but am now heading up to Gympie Skidpan on the same day.

I've "given up" on circuit suggestions - hence I now just do my own thing on the circuit and sprints. If someone wants to organise a sprints day I will definately be along to participate.

pretty slack on the organisers part, im all for these days where tracks get opened up and anyone can have a bit of a fun but there needs to be reasonable rules that are enforced.

keith reed

Certainly it was slack if someone was driving around the track with thongs however I can not understand how people are allowed to drive around a track without a helmet. Last time I was there people were driving at speeds of around 200kph. When we go to the drag strip we drive in a straight line and in my case reached a top speed of about 170 kph. No matter what speed you drive at helmets are compulsory. I think a review of the situation is required.

jamesmp

I took particular notice of his footwear because Dad brought up driving around the circuit wearing thongs the day before.

I generally drive in thongs myself and don't see a problem for the track circuits, but track challenges are a completely different story.

Carbon

I have to say, I thought the rules for those events were long pants, long sleeve shirt and helmet.

So yeah why then wear thongs if wearing a helmet. No matter.

I was actually talking to NorthYou about this exact topic tonight. I can't even drive in thongs. I must be uncoordinated. If I wear them, I take them off. I simply think its dangerous - imagine one of them getting caught when you're driving.....

I don't think it's the organisers fault for his stupidity. ANYONE interested in getting their cars out on a race track is briefed before hand and should already know prior that Closed footware is a must! Responsibility falls on the driver.... It is "at your own risk" after all...

stumbles
26-04-2012, 07:21 AM
The rules need to be enforced to not only protect the organisers from being liable but also to protect the future of events like these. All it will take is a serious accident and things like this, power cruise, cruise for charity and any other event which allows cruising on a track will be finished. Honestly, the fact that the guy broke the rules and wrote off his car is a shame but it's his own problem. The organisers not doing their job could effect all of us who enjoy these days.

There is an art to it, I admit. I lift my foot off the accelerator before applying the brakes.

I don't think the organisers can be blamed. Drivers are briefed before going out onto the track and if they choose to ignore the advice, then they do so at their own risk. People need to be responsible for their own actions. Sadly, some pay the ultimate price.

like Keith said, you should have seen our last 'happy laps' day at Lakeside...
I know there were times where I managed around 180kph down the main straight, only limited by traffic. No helmets, long pants requirement etc  If I'd known we were going to be allowed to hit those sort of speeds I would have brought the skid lid and wouldn't have taken a passenger. But once you're out there, it's hard not to get into it if no-one is stopping you.

The 110kph happy laps session limit was strictly enforced on this one though. It was really only that drag/track event thing that drivers were allowed to go flat out. And as far as I know, helmets, long clothing was mandatory for that event.

VY-SV8
29-04-2012, 08:00 PM
i don't think the speed limit was that strict, i ran out of 4rd a few times down the main straight... so i woulda pushed 150-160 a couple times and never heard a peep. i even had a few of the turbo boys blow by me pretty hard while i was already cracking the 110 mark.

i too was surprised without signing a form or a helmet.

I behaved and didn't really go beyond 120... because I saw cars getting pulled off the track in the previous sessions.

Last time the question was asked as to a speed limit during the drivers brief. The guy just replied 'just drive safely'.... However this time they did strictly dictate a 110kph limit. So yeah, we were supposed to be keeping it to 110kph - their theory was that's the legal street limit on the roads, so no extra safety gear requied. I guess without a radar gun/speed measuring device it's difficult to enforce. But they did specify a 110kph limit. So the rest is up to us drivers. If we exceeded the limit and crashed, the responsibility would probably come back onto the driver.
