looking at getting a new diff for my ve . it an auto with a 2.92 non lsd.
i want to put a 3.45 lsd out of a ve ss manual is it worth getting one from the wreckers and running the risk of a lemon or am i better off buying it new from holmart with the hardened gears?
what's it worth to put it in and recalibrate the speedo?

aprox $300 to fit with calibration
although i have heard that the speedo will still read corect speed without
recalibrating
my thoughts would be to go new

I have gonn diff gears from 2.8 to 3.4 and now run a 3.7 on the Luxo A6 . IMO the perfect ratio for the six speed auto is 3.9 and is what I will get when I blow the next set - it will happen. Yeh each of the mentioned diffs have been literally destroyed along with the LSDs, but the Harrop True Trac LSD is worth considering as it bites hard and loved the hard stuff, awesomme bit of kit albeit its a tad noisy on highway cruise and around town due to the geared nature of the product.
Oh the 3.7 does 107 kph at 2,000rpm which is quiet and responsive.

Pete,
how does that ratio go economy wise. At the moment i get around 13l per hundred@50kmph around town and about 10l per hundred on highway. Untuned stock as a rock. how do my figures compare
Thanks

One for sale on the LS1 forum , $500. Pete would be the wrong one to ask about economy.

Hi James
I have the 3.45 from holmart ( HSV manual diff ) in my VE SS, A6.. Very happy with it for what I do , mainly street driven with occasional drags and track day.I think the decider for you on ratio's is what u intend to do with the car. Lots of drag racing / skidpan stuff like Pete , Id go the 3.7 or 3.9.. Occasional stuff like I do the 3.45 is ideal..
The 3.45 will smarten up your acceleration but not kill the economy.. Its the other stuff you add that will do that.. Im at 21.5lt / 100km average now.
last night at the Motorplex I did a 12.122 sec pass at 113mph on 20 inch street tyres

thanks for that. im thinking the same as you in that my car is primarily for the street/ work
so the 3.45 will be sufficent.
thanks all for the help/ advice

i have the 3.7 diff gears in my auto wagon and my economy on the highway before was around 10 l per 100
now it is around 10 l per 100
i can get it lower but a little squirt here and there gets me back to 10
i went down the coast last week and was on 9.4 per 100 till i hit the trafic at surfers
one thing i did notice was towing my trailer the economy is worse with the lower gears, i thought it would have been beter

I have a big cammed, high stalled and short gearing in my LS1 A4 and i get around 9-10Ltr / 100km.
Whats up with the stock VE's getting the same?

Same with me mate. I always use the A/C (except right now as it need re-gassing since putting the bigger cam in) and i sit on the speed limit. I actually found i get the best economy at 120km/h. That was with the 3.73:1 gearing behind the A4. It will be different with the new diff currently being built (4.11:1's).
