1st TRACK DAY FOR THE YEAR

LAKESIDE RACEWAY

FRIDAY 6th of May 2011

HI ALL,

Once again it’s time to get ready to go for a few hot laps in our own cars, the 1st club track day of the year being held at Lakeside.

All clubbies are invited to attend this fantastic day and the choice is yours whether you want to have a go on the track or you just want to come and spend an enjoyable day with your fellow clubbies being a spectator.

We will point out that this day is NON – COMPETITIVE. There are no trophies to be won, it is just a fun day where you can get on the track and drive your car within your own ability, not the cars. There is no pressure on you other than to come out onto the track to have a bit of fun and do some laps at your own pace. We please ask everyone to drive within their own ability and at a speed you feel comfortable with. While some of the club members have plenty of experience on the track, the majority of us have not. At the end of the day we want everyone to drive their cars home straight. For the newer club members who may not be familiar with these days, there is no door handle to door handle racing. Everyone who is participating is placed into groups according to their experience and then you are sent out on the track at different intervals. Both the guys and the girls are invited to have a go. For those that are not experienced you are more than welcome to do nana laps, the day is purely about fun, fun, and fun. Once again we will stress, drive to your own ability, do have fun but most importantly keep it safe.

There will be a maximum of 40 - 50 cars allowed to participate in the track day at Lakeside. The Brisbane Commodore Car Club is coming along as well with them being allocated 10 – 15 cars on the track. The remainder will be the XR Club and others. There will be no mixing between the brands of cars in the groups on the day. Fords will run with Fords, Holden’s will run with Holden’s etc.

The club will have use of the track for the entire day. The day will be broken up probably into three to four sessions with us using the entire track. Everyone participating will be briefed about this on the day before heading out onto the track.

thanks for the invite again Shane!
providing I can get an RDO approved for the day (shouldn't be a problem), I'll be there

See if I can drop another second or 2 off my previous lap times :)

plenty of notice guys!
put in for your RDO's or annual leave now so you can make it.

it's an awesome day, no pressure to drive beyond what you and your car are comfortable at! And if Gary is there, he's always very generous in offering valuable racing line tips.

check out the pictures and videos in the pictures/videos section of our previous track days with the XR boys at both Lakeside & QR

Yes. You have been given plenty of notice. The XR boys did this on purpose to make sure everyone had maximum time to organize a day off.

Personally I can't be anything more than a maybe at this particular point as I will be starting a new job soon.

For those that haven't been have a go. It is a great day

hrmm dont think it will, if my memory serves me right theres a noise limit on the track? ( and twin 3.5inch exiting out from underneath both back doors with no mufflers is a tad loud)

EQUIPE-T
11-03-2011, 12:16 PM
Shane would be the best person to answer the question, but Gary usually brings his unregistered VT clubcar on the back of the trailer. It's a fairly full on race car.
Only limitation would be the strict noise limits imposed at Lakeside. One of the Falcons last track day had to park it because the nosie nazi's deemed his car too loud. So if it's a full race exhaust, you might have problems

yeh thats what i thought :(, have an uncle up north i was chatting to last night, complained about not having the time anymore to take the car out to the track and so forth, i saw this thread and thought AWESOME!!! ill trailer the VR down and have some fun, but as you said the noise of this thing is the noise of a V8 supercar, and it bloody loud lol,

although there is enough notice i might get him on the horn an ask if he can put a smaller system on with mufflers, this might work out yet :D :bouncing:

Sheesh this is a cheap cost for a full day compared to absolutely anything around. :)

I feel that the Lakeside Circuit is oh so much better as a drivers track than QR - just my opinion, its more akin to general road conditions and mountain twisters than QR.

My last time out with the Ford folk at QR was absolutely awesomme!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic bunch of friendly folk. There have been one or two events that I couldn't make since then.

I just checked, my AASA Clubman Licence is still valid till August 2011. Yayyy...

May 6th being a Friday could be a bummer for me as per last event but at least there is plenty of lead time for me organise something. As long as I'm not heading to an "on call" weekend I will definately participate.

PS
Darren, I wanna chase the Little Red Car again, that was a hoot last time together at QR semingly eons ago. Beauty was that we were running quick with no demerit points or loss of licence stuff LOL. That lill beast of yourse is so light weight it definately challenges my raw muscle and newer technologies of the VE Calais-V from a power to weight and handling perspective.

lol, I think as usual it's gonna be more a case of the little red car trying to catch the big blue car ;) But if I can even keep it in my sights I'll be happy. But yeah I'm getting better, last track day I even managed to put some of Gary's good advice into action. Might have taken me most of the day to do it, but I got there lol

Lakeside is a very challenging track. I actually didn't like it much for the first couple of sessions. QR didn't have the concrete baracades, bridges, tyre walls so close to the track. VERY daunting at first, in fact I really didn't start pushing it until the final couple of sessions. But those last couple of sessions were awesome, I managed my best time in the last session and I reckon there was a lot of room for improvement without pushing the boundaries any further than I was. Just have to work on those racing lines!

Would be awesome if you could make it Pete. Missed you & Calais not being there last time. I'll put my RDO request in, might even try to get the Thursday off as well so I can give the car the once over the day before. Should be no dramas getting it approved.

I got lots to do with my bushes and suspension before heading on a track day - $$ I don't have. Bugger me my left rear bearing and Hub was sloppy and knackered, now that its fixed it profiles the shortomings of my bushes which have never been replaced across 118,000k.

It will be a slow bit by bit process to get back to normal that I hope is ready by Lakeside day.

In relation to noise it is a limit of 95db - I have had some mods to mine and i hope it scrapes in :bouncing:
The GT in question that was sidelined was not due to the exhaust it was due to the big screw on top of the motor making all the whining noise

Yeh I haven't run mine on Lakeside since the twin 3" Hurricane system with 100 cpi cats sorst addition (vibrates begeeserie out of my upstairs loung area at idle even when just cranking over at idle in the downstairs garage). She was fine to run with Mr Muffler twin 2.5" system and 200cpi cats on previous lakeside runs.

I'll bring some steel wool and some tie wire just in case lol.

not sure if you are aware, but the dB measurement isn't taken directly from your cars exhaust, they measure it a few hundred metres away from the track. So even if your car exhaust is say 100dB, it should read a lot lower from a distance. My car isn't overly loud, but the exhaust a couple of years ago measured 94dB@3300rpm (one of the perks of being a Qld Transport officer!) I have no doubt it's quite a bit louder than that a 6000+rpm, yet there was heaps louder cars than mine at the last Lakeside day and they had no dramas. As said, earlier I think only one of the Falcons was getting in strife because of the whine from the supercharger which was fairly noisy on full throttle.

Nah put a LS3, CAI, Cam and stuff. That should launch the baby.

BTW I was out cruising the Tamborine area today. Man oh man those Federal Evos are the skatiest tyres in the wet - easy come-a-gutsa stuff. I think the base issue is super hard compound, they never wear out but slippery as a downside.

At the time it was enough to tilt the scales in favour of 355. By the time it was tuned it cost me as much as I was prepared to spend. Would have to look up my old receipts, from memory it was not far sure of about $9,000

I'm really looking forward to it Darren but am a tad nervy that my current sorst won't make the cut off db. Was on MSN with Garry last night and we are gunna do a sound test and see what results this coming weekend.

The previous sorst pulled just inside the limit, but this Hurricane twin 3" one with 100 cpi cats is a much deeper note than the previous one which may upset the applecart.

Sounds quiet enough inside but does occasionally set off other peoples car alarms at idle in various shopping centre car parks, hence not sure how it will go with sound limits. :(

Oh sheit Darren, now I have to go back out to Pedders and get one of them Strut Brace cheater things too - just jokin mate, VEs have a pretty rigid and stiff base design hence I've never indulged my fantacy along that line.

Hmm, if all goes to plan I may, just may, have a surprise awaiting for you too. All fun and I'm now really looking forward to it. Hope my ol fart nerves hold up, I'm not as practiced at big end speed and risk as I used to be 12 mths or so ago lol...

Umm, I seem to recall you did the maths after our last outing together and whilst mine has heaps more torque and power, the actual power to weight ratio of the Lill Red Car versus Big Bertha Blue Luxo was very similar - just shows that over time and design change and technology your car and mine are still very similar and great for friendly rivilary.

Yeh mate, I rekken even if its over the DB limit I will get a few laps in the Big Blue Car before they pull me off the track - if so i will take lotsa pics and hang sheit and provide "not so expert" advice to everyone LOL..

Realistically these ford and holden events are oh so cheap compared to any other circuit events spanning a whole day. You would be absolute nuts not to take up the opportunity.

PS
Are the laps timed? I still have the electronic timing thingamagig stuck on my windscreen from a few runs across both QR and Lakeside circuits in the past 8 mths or so.

Pete

yeah Pete every lap is timed, you get a printout at the end of the day with every sessions individual laps listed, as well as the other cars on the same session. My best time (1:11) was a fairly average compared to a lot of the cars out there (there was some seriously fast cars!!), but I was just getting the hang of it by the end of the day (my second last lap was my fastest), so hopefully this time, I won't have the initial nerves and fears of the unknown to get over and I can start trying to bring those numbers down. Just don't want to get over confident and hit something.. I'd prefer to err on the side of caution somewhat and drive the car home in one piece. I might wind the shocks up a bit harder this time and see what happens. I forgot that I have them on the softest setting for the street.

I've got the in-car camera this time too (it arrived too late for the last track day), so should make for some good action shots. Karen is probably going to come out again too, and pilot the video camera again.

Yes I will bring the vb rough as it is provided I am still here. Went and bought a cooler for the power steer today. Tomorrow I am going to see if the wheels off the vt fit on the vb. Reason being that the wheels on the ve and the vt are 18" and the wheels on the vb are 17". If I were able to interchange the tyres between the three vehicles so much the better. If anyone knows were I might be able to buy some racing slicks, would prefer second hand please let me know. I have ruined street tyres on the track fairly quickly before and would rather not do it again.

I think you will find the VE Stud and nut size is larger than previous models. Nothin a bit of DRILL work wouldn't fix I rekken Keith.

I got caught years ago (car was about 1 month old off the showroom floor) when Markone2 loaned a set of Nittos on 18" rims. The buggers wouldn't even go close, we contemplated welding the suckers on, but being a brand new car thought better of it.

How did the various coolers come up in operation mate?

I've decided to leave the Strut Brace idea for another day when I am hopefully better flushed with money. The Calais will just have its normal road suspension for the track day.

strut brace probably isn't anywhere near as important on a VE Pete, the VE has a far more rigid chassis than any previous models. But as for the early girls like mine, a strut brace is definitely worthwhile. I wouldn't have bothered if it was just for the street, but on the track the early girls twist a fair bit. The VN-VZ are even worse due to GMH's cost cutting idea of sikaflexing the firewall in, instead of being welded like the pre-VN models.....

I think you will find the VE Stud and nut size is larger than previous models. Nothin a bit of DRILL work wouldn't fix I rekken Keith.

Pete, it was the vt wheels that I meant. I knew the ve wheels would not fit without modification. I tried them on yesterday and they are better than the 17" that I have on the vb. Both have 235 tyres on them. Must be in the offset.
Have not tried the cooler yet. Getting limited time off work at the moment. Perhaps this weekend or next month when I get 11 days off.

If ya wanna go for a mountain cruise, some scenic serenty and a B.B.Q I'm happy to do a run with you and any others on BCCC that wanna have some fun and relax. No need for Mach 1 speed, just a cruise, relax and enjoy mother nature. Just let me know.

I was "on call" last weekend so i'm now free to do a cruise if ya want.

I wanna try a longer distance run of this Roil stuff to make a fair judgement. I will be bunging in some more of that Redline Breakin stuff for the diff to test it out too.

Whilst that "Roil" stuff is supposed to be Auto aditive friendly, I'm a tad nervous about adding it in case I get more slip even though I have the line pressures pretty high to get some seriously snappy shift changes - my auto box has gone from 4 litres up to 10 litres with all the coolers and lines added...

I have ruined street tyres on the track fairly quickly before and would rather not do it again.
the 16" vt s pack wheels fit the vb so no reason why 18's wouldn't

VR wont be comming out after all, he got the exhaust done ( twin 2.5inch, duel mufflers, side exit both side ) only problem now that clutch has shat itself so the box is getting ripped out to be replaced by a custom 6 speed sequential

At one stage I had 16" sv 5000 rims. They just covered the 4 pot callipers on the front. The 17" rims just touch on full lock. I thought that putting on 18" rims would make the situation worse. In fact it was better.

Now that I have a spare set of rims ( ve) I am going to have them machined to suit the vb or for that matter pre ve. I have had a good read of the subject on the ls1- holden forum. After you get through all of the crap there was some good information. Whereas I understand that the hub takes all of the weight and the studs are there to hold the rim on I still feel more comfortable knowing that is all right. I am going to have spacers made up to suit the 14mm to 12 mm stud. Also I am ( please excuse the language moderators ) going to get some wheel nuts off a ford focus. They have a larger seat on the wheel nut. I have bought some old stock pirelli corsa's, did not cost to much. If they are good I have gained, If not to bad.
