Went back to N.Z. about a month ago to a close friends funeral. Got the phone bill today. 10.35 minute call to Australia, $30.80. 21 minute call, $58.80 Moral of the story dont make phone calls back to Australia when overseas. They won't catch me out again.

It is expensive to make those calls, but its not Telstra that the problem...Both international data and call rates from overseas is set by the host carrier.
The call rates are also stated on the Telstra.com webpage for calls from o/s to an Australian destination.
It doesnt matter what carrier you are with (with the exception huchinson /3) you will be hit with high costs on these types of calls. Huchinson Telecom has towers thoughout the world and as such offer the best call rates from o/s back to Australia (as long as the reciver is on the same network). When I worked for Telstra I would deal with at least two of these disputes a week.
Got a Iphone or Ipod touch?
I use skype on telstra's 3G while roaming from home for international calls, wifi at home. I probably make around 6-15 hours worth of international calls and use fuck all data each week..
Best thing is its dirt cheap and most of the time is better call quality, can even set up numbers in other country's that connect to my skype account for just a few bucks a month
I spend maybe... $40 a week on international calls for 15 hours
