Hey guys,
I want to remove all the aircon system now from my project. I initially was just going to keep the heater box and under dash unit to run the demister for the front windscreen but I believe it is possible to get heated front windscreens? Does anyone know anything about these or where to get one?
Darren, would you happen to know if this is legal? As far as I know so long as there is a demister system on the front windscreen, aircon / heater boxes aren't needed as id prefer to remove it all if i can.
Cheers.

I have gone through the code of practice (which the vehicle safety standards regulation refers to) and found this:
Windscreen demisters and washers were required in all vehicles as listed in AIS Information Sheet 14 (ADR’s 15 and 16 apply). If the specific vehicle was manufactured after these dates, the demister and washers must be in working order. To be in working order, the demister must have a working fan capable of forcing air (hot or cold) onto the base of the windscreen inside the vehicle and be able to effectively demist the screen.
so that rules out the V8 Supercar style demister wire screens. You do need a fan that blows air onto the screen, however it can be hot or cold air, but needs to be capable of demisting the screen. For example you can have your heater disconnected, providing your A/C works as it can demist the screen. But obviously you aren't going to have A/C
Some of those hotrod guys use a special kit that has a fan with an electric heater built into it, which blows onto the screen. Check out this link

I am going with a heated front screen in my car, but for road legal demisters I have seen some of the guys use 12V hair driers as the demister fan in targa type events.

if you just want to lose some weight, you could pull the evaporator core out of the A/C unit. Won't affect the heater operation

Thats a thought but I suppose for the few kg's it won't really matter. I was going to remove the a/c controls cause the car had climate control and just have a button for the demister like the one for the rear window but it turns out I will need that. the door vents won't work anymore once the roll cage goes in the bar will go right down the middle of that vent i think, nor will the ones in he middle cause of the gauges, so i was going to just pull all the vents and a/c out. I better leave it though, i do want it legal.

Two 12V hairdriers weigh less than one kg total. You can mount them with diffusers pointing up the screen,or you can run vacuum cleaner type hose, or pool hose, to the vents under the windscreen. All out of the way and just one switch for demisting.
Allows you to get rid of 4kg of water as well as all the metal and plastic bits.

Hi Guy's ~ not forgetting any Girls
If I am breaching any forum procedures / rules I apologise profusely. If so kindly remove it should mods feel it inappropriate.
I did ask the admins / mods side and was never answered ?
.....
While using Google etc. There was a member looking into Heated Windscreens ....
Really not sure of many car builds or if there are many nearing completion but may be able to assist if for a race car .... If for a rally car .... well, as having a couple of adults squashed into a small space while driving like men posessed, dripping in sweat, and shouting obsenities at each other may warrent a heated screen
While I enjoyed a number of years racing in Historics in the late nineties
My last race was in " Sunny Queenslands Lakeside " but to my dismay it peed down all weekend. Unfortunately while tucked in behind a local driver I thought I’d be safe. Huh …. Went off under Dunlop bridge and damaged my car ( And my ego )
While searching for screens also for a freind building the same car, I decided to have some made in the UK as importing some was pretty expensive.
Certainly more than I wanted t pay.
So I started a business importing / stocking Heated Windscreens.
I shall be keeping various screens a little later to hopefully assist the more popular cars from Historic's to many current LM vehicles. When there is demand for Australia only produced models I will be stocking quite a good selection. Especially the Commodore models.
Have already purchased 10 RX3 Coupe Heated screens. This requires sending samples so these can be made.
Once I have established what popular models I need I shall be combining these with future orders.
Please find details below that may interest you, if you are still looking to purchase within a few months.
Most things of interest are listed below should anyone have further interest for their money pit.
As for putting all details up, I have done this to save interested parties having to ask the Q : ? as they say.
In Advance ....Thanks Guy's
........................................
Ok ....
Basically after attending Bathurst support races at the 12 Hr earlier last year, and seeing the demise of so much racing, due to the horrendous rain.
It again re-in-forced the benefit’s of having a heated screen so I looked into the supply again, especially for the Evo I'm building as it shares a common screen with the Lancer.
Should have stock of the following within 4 - 5 months depending on demand, however many of these are " being manufactured currently " so should you have any interest my contacts can be found below.
Some of the models being stocked:
BMC Minis : 1962 - 1978
BMW Minis all models
BMW : E30, 1 Series E87 also E30 M3 and E46 Coupe
Datsun : 1600 !
Ford : Cortina MK 1 Possibly MK 11
Ford : Escort MK 1 & MK11
Ford : Aust HO / XY Falcon and many other Falcon models
Ford Mustang : ( Early models only at this stage )
Commodore : ( Various )
Holden: HQ ( Seriously ! )
Holden : Torana XU1
Honda : Civic EK
Mazda : RX3 Coupe
Mazda MX5 All models from 1989
Mazda : RX7 Series 1 -3
Mazda RX7 FD
Mitsubishi : Evolution Lancer 1993 - Current ( Models 1-10 )
Nissan : Pulsar GTi-R ( Same as N14 )
Nissan : Skyline GTR 32 / 33 / 34
Porsche : 911 1968 – 1989
Porsche : 911 GT2 - 3
Subaru : GC8 & 2000 - 2006 models
All screens will come with in green tinted glass, and also available with a distinctive sun band at the top ....
These will need to be specially ordered as most drivers like to put their own sponsors name in this area and either black out this section themselves.
Plain un-tinted glass may also be available but may incur delays in manufacturing times.
If required .... This will increase costs $12 -15
Due to current cost restraints I am required to purchases in batches of four as manufacturing procedures dictate these conditions.
These are obviously laminated, using full light green tinted glass without the common heavy top tint band like most screens fitted in Australia meeting current European / World standards They are made to OEM thickness to meet ADR, have multiple Tungsten zig zag micro wires up and down with what appears to be one bank / element but is actually two on most screens, with the exception of some ( VT - VZ as these are placed across the screen ) there is a small 4-5 mm gap down the centre on the seperate element screens.
Although you can see these, visibility is considered normal. Being Internationally E marked ( EC1 43R ) so legal for all states ADR / registration ( Not that that matters for racing, however would be suitable for registered cars competing Tarmac Racing type events etc ).
I'm have engaged respected company Trading for many years to manufacture these for me. They are contracted to a number of OEM too inc Ford Europe, plus a number of kit car manufactures for their heated screen supply.
Further .... I requested a number of things from the technical guru within the company to clarify data of the screens i.e. what actual size are the Tungsten Micro Wires in the heating element banks installed in the screens, on each side ( 17 - 22 microns depending on model of car )
Do they go right across the screens to the edges ? Very close to the sides however on some screens this distance may appear large, but when turned on they act like a saucepan on the stove, where heat travels up the handle after a short time.
Heat up / defrost time in seconds or minutes in adverse conditions ? Will take approx 2 minutes for full vision if covered in heavy frost / ice.
Amps required while in use ? Approx 8 amps on a Lotus Exige / Elise to 10.6 amps on a large screen like an Evo X Lancer.
Is a Relay / Timer required etc ?
This is one area I am out of my depth understanding wiring, so I am advised the following.
This is up to the individual .... but to run through a decent fused relay, and in conjunction with an led light indicating the screen is in use would be best.
When installed in current model road going Ford Europe, and various other vehicles including the Land Rover series.
Screens are obviously controlled by the factory ECU. So it is advised / recommended to have them relayed and fused.
Interstate delivery can be arranged as I am happy to box / crate screens personally fully covered in expanding foam.
Alternatively I can pack and have a courier collect on your behalf .... I use Couries Please and for O/Seas DHL.
I may be able to have delivered to certain interstate areas at a reduced cost, ( i,e shared costs ) being piggy backed with screens I'm already sending interstate.
Insurance coverage covering breakage is included in the freight. If broken I must receive a picture while still in the box to valadate any claims. Screens are packed in a way to elliminate deciept in this respect.
Public liability insurance to 5 Million is also covering the product.
Data of element positioning etc, and the general specs can be found in the attachment below. Black lines indicate the main wire layout / design, which surround the screen. This element positioning assuring no edge fogging .... There are two banks one either side with a small gap in-between the two banks of approx 4-5 mm.
The wires in the exaple are for illustration pursposes and usually the are two wires at each bottom corner.
Here is a quote from their element man, as it may be of interest to those who understand ! ….
Here’s an example of how the touring/racing car screens are made up. The electrical data is ‘per side’, we try to keep the power density to around the 3.5-4.5W/dm2 because any lower and the performance is not so good and any higher and you risk getting a hazy view when in use. This is all dependant on the windscreen in question, size and shape affects it quite a bit.
Drawing / Data :

I'm also onto a US company who manufactures a stick on protective film providing additional life. Single layer starts at $75.
This could extend the screen life and also assist against the infomus sand blasting.
Conditions of Purchase:
Please note : If I am unable to supply the screens within a given time frame, due to any issues out of my control i.e. strikes or customs hold ups etc, and this genuinely creates a problem for you.
I am happy to return your deposit in full, but with respect if just a change of mind on your behalf happens, your deposit is non re-fundable .... Sorry
However I must stress that “ I'm given a manufacturing time and can only give my word on someone else’s. “
Deposit required For any model ~ $200 upon ordering. " If not held in stock "
Once your preferred method of payment for the screen has been made ( I’d prefer an EFT if poss ) ….. Kindly advise when a deposit has been made by email, including your reference N’o :
Manufacturing / lead times is 5 weeks for any new model.
Warranty :
180 day warranty on the heating elements, subject to correct fitting instructions.
Balance plus any freight, won't be due till arrival.

For non-commodores that seems like a good deal. I guess the Supertaxis here mean there is volume demand for the Falcon/Commodore ones.
I am getting a V8 Supercar screen from the Aussie guy who does them for less than $400 at the end of this month.
All VT-VZ are less than $400 with the VE just a bit over.
The guy who does them is coming to Brisbane around the end of January. He has two options, either the newer slower to demist fine lines, or the older, quicker thick lines. Seeing as mine is completely off road he suggested the older thick filaments.

Are the locally made ones ADR compliant ? or lightweight glass as I have spent some time re-searching them.
I specifically asked for E marked, or mine would have been way under $400 also .... After working as an insurance loss accessor for a while ( As insurenace companies look for anything to avoid a payout, I made sure there would be no problems if someone was involved in an accident while using one of these.
Possibly PM me his contacts and I'll ask if you don't want to put it here ?

No they probably are not ADR approved, from the original post, where the car was being gutted of heater box etc, I assumed it was for a race car so none of that matters.
But having read it again, now I realise he does need ADR ones as it is a "project" not a race car. I mis-interpreted term at the time.

Hey will have to chat to you on Custom Commodores about it because i'll be deleted here lol. Yeah mate, I wanted to drop some weight out the thing but after powercruise I'm rethinking the cars setup. With 10.5" M&H Racemaster cheater slicks they call it its a soft wrickle wall tyre on in top gear when it reaches max power in the rev range it breaks traction and gets all loose which at that sort of speed its abit scary lol so I just back off. Maybe at the drags it will have more traction? It was a hot day so the tyre temp could have gotten up there too i'm unsure. Wider tyres are definately needed I think. Maybe a 4 link rear end is the go. Its got standard suspension pretty much front and rear! Just King springs all round.
