View Full Version : The big "C" word
No I wasn't swearing, but gee I feel like it right now...
I never know whether to post personal stuff on public forums but I'm in the mood to type something.
Just got back from seeing the missus in hospital. She's been in for almost a week now having various tests after becoming crook last weekend..She got told this arvo that a cat scan she had has found a "mass" use your own imagination as to what that might be, down near the base of her stomach, bowel area. :(
Needless to say, thats not the kind of news you want the doctors telling you.
You often hear of people you vaguely know going through this kind of thing, but don't tend to give it a second thought really. Then out of the blue you find yourself going through it or at least someone very close to you.
My nature is to get all the facts and information on what we're dealing with before I go off speculating on worse case scenarios, unfortunatley the wife is the opposite. But she has the "mass" in her so I suppose she's allowed to think differently to me on this one.
The surgeon came in tonight while I was there and he said the gastro team have a consult on Friday mornings on various cases, hers being at the top of the list, so they'll have a pow wow about it tomorrow morning on the plan of attack. Another scan/MRI is the first option, hopeing to get a better idea/picture on what they are dealing with before making any surgery decisions.
Might feel better if I drive the Monaro to work tomorrow..:)
Cheers
shit mark... Hope its nothing major mate.....
All the best hey...
Like you said, its not something you think about untill its on you or someone close to you.
Cheers mate, fingers crossed it's nothing major and gets sorted quickly..

Being a health profesional myself my thoughts go to you mate and your wife
Hopefully, its just a burst intestine. But she should have been running a fever by now.
Only saying so cause i had a ruptured appendix just before xmas. At first it was pretty sharp pain in the abdomen, couldn't eat or pass stools. I first went there but no fever so they pumped me full of morphine and i went back home. 3 days later the pain abruptly changed and was only over the area where the apendix was.
Turned out it ruptured, spilling the contents of the lower intestine thought the abdomen. They had to literelly pull everything out to clean it all up and i was on Intervenious anti-boitics 3 times a day (900ml) for a week. then went onto tablets when i was discharged for 2 weeks after. Hopefully its just something that has ruptured and not something else. We live in a glorious age of anti-boitics. Without them i would have died a painful death on a hospital bed from toxic shock.

Oh Mark. Not good news mate. All the best to all of you in this harsh time.
A family member of mine has just been diagnosed with an inoperable cancer. Not good times.
Chin up mate. Need anything let me know. Maybe a run in the car.
Thanks for the words guys..Should have more news today on plan of attack, looking like surgery is the most likely option at this stage..

Surgery whilst not good for any one at any time means the surgeons are going to have a look and see what is going on. If it is the BIG C then more than likely surgery and doses of chemotherapy to follow and being unwell from that for some time yet to come mate. Im sorry if i sound doom and gloom but i know only to well what you and your family will be going through as my primary job is to look after pts like your wife and in most cases it is my department the Emergency Department that finds these bad news stories out first hand becuase the GP usually misses these things. Again thoughts go to your wife and your family

Sorry to hear Mark.
I feel for you mate after things with Mum and Gail.
Yes you have to get all the facts and stay cool mate.
Both where in hospital awhile ago and worried myself to the point where I got Shingles (spelling) so I made myself sick with worry.
So I was just about no good to anybody.
Be strong mate it will be hard but you will do it.
All the best.
Peter.
Thanks for the support guys. The missus has been in for surgery this morning and had the offending "mass" removed. Fingers crossed the tests on it come back clear...
Cheers

Well the missus got the final results today as to what the tumour was the surgeons removed the other week. Although it was confirmed as a form of bowel cancer they are very confident that the "surgery was cureative", to use their words. Due to her relatively young age the oncology dept still want do a further ct scan just to double check it hasn't moved anywhere else, which with the particular type of cancer this is, they say is highly unlikely. Anyways, it looks all good and we appear to have dodged a bullet..:)
Cheers
