Congratulations to Brad, on winning June's Car of the month.
When Brad decided to upgrade from his vn to plant his behind in a vr ss, im sure he didnt expect to have come as far as he has done with it!!! But as all people who modify cars tell you, once you start its very hard to stop.
Brad purchased the VR in February 2005. After only owning it for a very short period of time he realised that not all was how it should have been. Things kept breaking or not working correctly. As some people at the time said, Brad had a lemon. At the Brisbane Commodore 1st Dyno Day, he pulled a meagre 150rwhp. Brad knew something had to be done.
Not one to be deterred, Brad decided a gameplan on how to make the SS the way he wanted it to be. Fast, sound tough and look good.
Originally he booked the car into The Brock Shop, where Joe and the boys were to fit a cam and tune the ECU. Once pulled down though, there were definate signs of wear, so Brad and Joe decided to go all out and build a tough daily street/strip weapon.
What Brad had returned to him was nearly a different vehicle. A full rebuild of the 304ci was done, with all parts except the crank replaced. The standard stroke remained, as this was not part of future plans. While the motor was apart a Wade 325 cam was fitted, as well as bumping the compression up to 9.5:1. A bit of headwork was performed and the whole lot returned to Brad to run in.
After clicking over the required run in miles, Brad had Toys Exhaust at Redcliffe fit a full exhaust system to the SS, which includes Pacemaker Extractors and a full twun 2 1/2 inch system, which barks an absolutley menacing growl when the throttle is mashed. Back at the Brock Shop where final tuning was being performed, the SS spat out 246rwhp. AN absolutly awesome figure for a rebuild and cam. Once back in Brads hands, he enjoyed the car for a while until the gearbox gaveway to its newfound power supply.
The auto was fully rebuilt by Burpengary Transmissions, and fitted with a stage 2 shift kit, 2800rpm stall convertor and corevette servos. This helps put the power down even better.
Since having all this work done Brad has also fitted a bigger throttle body and high flow airbox amongst other things. It will need to go back for another tune to take advantage of these mods.
First time out at the track he cracked a 14 second quarter. Just recently at the Street Commodores drag day he pulled a pb of 13.6, which is absoltly awesome.
But the car isnt all about the motor, oh no, inside there are two 12 inch subs , pioneer splits, a pioneer dvd touch screen head unit. Keeping an eye on shift points is the obligatory Autometer monster tacho, and engine vitals are taken care of with oil pressure and water temp gauges under the head unit. Power windows all round and stylish SS seats make it a pleasureable place to be.
On the outside the SS squats closer to mother earth with the aid of King springs. The IRS definalty looks tuff under hard acceleration. Keeping the car in contact with the ground are a set of 18inch VY SS rims, which suit it to a tee.
Future plans for the VR see a aftermarket computer system, larger fuel system, intercooler and blower as well as bigger exhaust to cope.
All in all what once was a lemon has turned out t be one very very impressive ride, with the numbers to back it up on the street or strip. Hopefully the owner will come to his senses and not sell it lol!!!
Congrats Brad, it is one very sweet ride bro and a very deserving winner.
