View Full Version : Holden - Ford Track Day 14th May

Carbon

Ok guys,

Chris, Corey and myself had a great meeting with the XR owner club guys today. These guys were great to talk to and we are very much looking forward to doing things together in the future.

The Easter event we had already discussed will go ahead (but probably a bit later than easter). However one event that will go ahead sooner than later is a track day.

The XR owners club is having a track day on Friday 14th May and have invited us to participate. More details to follow but some basics are that they will be limiting to 50 cars between both clubs. At this stage I have committed to 15 cars. Chris, Corey and myself have already accpeted so at this point there is 12 places left.

Please only reply in the thread if you wish to attend. We will send banking details shortly for payment. Work on approx $150 for the day

Adam

List of Participants
1. Carbon
2. VP Pursuit
3. Northy
4. SMOK3Y
5. BigJim
6. Darren
7. CalaisRider
8. Garry
9. NZSHAKER
10. Dan

Some in this list I believe are still possibilities. I have put you in though for now. I have not included spectators. Please register your interest in the thread and I will add it to this list. The 15 spots look like filling seeing we are this far away from the date but I would like to lock in people prior. I also need to know if we need more so I can go back to the Ford guys.

What exactly do you mean by a "track day" Adam?...drags, circuit??

Carbon
06-02-2010, 10:31 PM
sorry everyone, well pointed out Mark

It is Queensland Raceway at Willowbank and will be circuit. Probably do it in our groups and then do one group of rivalry. There will be strict rules for this that must be adhered to.

Mark

Ok, not sure mines set up for any circuit work but I'll come and watch at least..

Carbon
06-02-2010, 10:47 PM
no worst than mine. From what I gathered today there would be stock XR8's and the like. You'll be right. I've never done track stuff but want to at least getout on the track and have a run

Darren

I'd be keen as mustard, the only problem being it's a weekday.
I'll see if there is any chance I can get an RDO for the day and get back to you

Bugger, wasn't paying attention to the date!!..Work day might be hard to get around..

VP Pursuit

The reason behind holding the event on a Friday is becasue it is cheaper then the weekend. By puting it up two months in advance it maximises peoples chances of if they wish to come arranging the day off work if they can get it.

I will put payment details up as soon as I have them.

Carbon

Well I can now give you even more time to plan for it.

Unfortunately QR have changed the date on the Ford boys due to a superbike round. So the new date is the 14th May. Still a Friday.

Yeh I might be a goer.

Depends if it coincides when I have not broken the engine or drive train doing motorsport stuff.

The A6 is my worry atm, but should be all good by the date in question.

Great to see you can make it Jim. I await with bated breath to see the new mods in acton.

I think Garry may be a goer too, was yakkin to him on MSN last night about the event. He has penciled it in as a goer, but lots can happen between now and then.

Hi Guys,

Shane here from the XR6 & XR8 Club of Qld. This is a copy of the email that has gone out to our club members about the upcoming track day. For those wishing to attend the track day (that is whether you are going on the track or just a spectator) could you please let Carbon (Adam) know if you are wanting the barbeque lunch. There will be FREE sausages and bread available but we need to know numbers so that we can make sure everyone is catered for. As per the below email, if you fail to let us know how many in your group would like to have the barbeque you might not be catered for, so therefore you could miss out.

The XR Club looks forward to enjoying the track day with you guys. It's going to be a great day.

TRACK DAY - QUEENSLAND RACEWAYS

FRIDAY 14TH MAY 2010

HI ALL,

Once again it’s time to get ready to go for a few hot laps in our own cars, the first club track day of the year being held at Queensland Raceways.
All clubbies are invited to attend this fantastic day and the choice is yours whether you want to have a go on the track or you just want to come and spend an enjoyable day with your fellow clubbies being a spectator.
We will point out that this day is NON – COMPETITIVE. There are no trophies to be won, it is just a fun day where you can get on the track and drive your car within your own ability, not the cars. There is no pressure on you other than to come out onto the track to have a bit of fun and do some laps at your own pace. We please ask everyone to drive within their own ability and at a speed you feel comfortable with. While a few of the club members are experienced at track days, the majority of us are not. At the end of the day we want everyone to drive their cars home straight. For the newer club members who may not be familiar with these days, there is no door handle to door handle racing. Everyone who is participating is placed into groups according to their experience and then you are sent out on the track at different intervals. Both the guys and the girls are invited to have a go. For those that are not experienced you are more than welcome to do nana laps, the day is purely about fun, fun, and fun. Once again we will stress, drive to your own ability, do have fun but most importantly keep it safe.

There will be a maximum of 50 cars allowed to participate in the track day at Queensland Raceways. Once again the Fiat boys will be joining us with them having approximately 6 – 7 cars on the track. The Brisbane Commodore Car Club is coming along as well with them being allocated 10 – 15 cars on the track. The remainder will be the XR Club. There will be no mixing between the brands of cars in the groups on the day. Fords will run with Fords, Holden’s will run with Holden’s etc.

The club will have use of the track for the entire day. The day will be broken up probably into three to four sessions with us using a combination of circuits, these being the Sprint circuit (1.89km), the Clubman circuit (2.1km) and the National circuit (3.12km). Everyone participating will be briefed about this on the day before heading out onto the track.

HERE ARE ALL THE DETAILS (Please read and absorb them)

Important Note – Whether you are participating on the track or just being a spectator we need to know the exact numbers in your group that require the barbeque lunch. If you fail to send an email with the number of people in your group that want to have the barbeque lunch, you may not be catered for and therefore you could miss out.

The club will be selling cold drinks on the day also.

Garry GHZ28 will be there. Be great that two ancients will be challenging the yunguns with the quick reflexes.

Its all about having a fun day out within the limits of your car. As I see it, doesn't matter much what your car is, nor how much power it has, or how its setup. Getting out there and having a go is all its about.

Darren

I second that Pete.
I won't be setting any land speed records, the car isn't capable of it nor is the driver :p

but it sure is going to be a huge addrenaline rush getting the car out on the track and being able to do the kind of stuff you would get put in jail for doing on the street :D

Sounds awesomme Darren. I'm really looking forward to it.

I need a trip to the suspension shop to find out what's banging and clanging in my front suspension prior to the Friday event. Hope its not too expensive to fix.

I'm not sure as its ben a whilse since I've run against Garry at QR but a few yeaars ago we were somewhere near close in lap times but nowdays he is about 10 seconds a lap quicker than me even when I had the semi comp tyres on. This time out in daily drive trim and road tyres he will extend that gap on me I'm sure.

yeah hope you sort the suspension noise out. Rather unsettling having noises in the suspension at events like this. I've taken the Thursday off as an RDO as well so I can go over the car. I will be going over all the suspension and brakes making sure it's all tight in in good condition. Derek - If you have not done this before this is a warning IT IS EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE - best fun you can have with your clothes on :D :D :D
I think there is some guys here that have done this before if not there is a few in the XR club that can show you a few pointers and the passenger rides might be a goer (still trying to nut this out so don't get the hopes up too high just yet) due to QR being a lot less dangerous than Lakeside
Just remember this is non compeditive and drive to your abilities not the cars

:D:D:D

Yep I had a ball.

Very happy with the overall performance of car, suspension, engine, Harrop Tru Track LSD; plus the new brake pads and Federal Evo tyres (albeit the "left" front and rear tyres did literally melt similar to a semi-comp tyre, which I was pleased with as they become sticky).

The VE does need that engine oil cooler though, the engine went into complete shut-down on the 5th lap of the national circuit turn 3 hairpin turn at the end of the back straight - as it has done many times before. Stops for about 1 minute, then fires up and goes fine.

The calais aparently was pulling a "James Bond" stunt and blowing a smoke screen over those behind for a whilse early in the day. All good, seemed to be an overfilled diff just getting rid of the excess onto the sorst pipes - sorted itself out.

Awesomme to see some folk make the effort to come out and watch and yarn - great to catch up again.

I spoke to quite a few of the Ford owners, a great bunch of friendly people. Thanks....

PS
Thats the first time I have ever had the entire track to myself - not one other car out there. It was really late in the day, no-one running so I headed out for a few National Circuit laps. That was a quite strange but great feeling - until they Red Flagged me to come in as the day was over - all good as my low fuel warning was on at that stage - yup I had a full 75 litre tank when I left home LOL. My computers say that I did 124 kilometers of circuit work for a fuel use of 44.7 litres per hundred k. Sheesh $150 to run an 8 hr day and 125 k of running QR is cheap as chips for the experience. Not sure how many laps that is but its lots.

Having top shelf brake pads all round and extreme temp fluids is generally the key to be able to circulate all day without problem.

Geese my wheels were silver at the beginning of the day and black as carbon all round by the end of it. Man the brake dust was literally caked on. That was my first all day event, usually I only do half day. 125k of full on track work is a lot in one day.

I shot it through a car wash on the way home, 80% back to normal LOL.

All Hail the "Pit Crew"

The Bendix Street Race and Track (SRT) pads feel very strong under both track and daily use (very niice to say the least), but are a tad dusty compared to the QFM AMR1s that I have previously had on for track. I noticed Darren's QFM pads were hardly dusty at all by days end - his and my car are hugely different in type and weight though.

Hmmm, maybe you weren't pushing hard enough ol mate your 37 is way better than my 45 litres. Sometimes a Cam and tad more power when used to the max can do that lol.

The Calais uses betewwn 9.5 and 11 on the highway, so i'm pretty happy with that for 305 rwkw.

Yeh on skidpan days I have had over half a tank of fuel but the "low fuel" warning comes on. Skidpan sucks a heap of fuel from mine as I'm between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm a fair bit.

Just Funnin Derek!!! But they do use some juice at full noise eh. You'll have to come play skidpan day sometime - you would love that too.

Yup, but holy shit they feel good with pedal pressure and what counts when going fast. Juts my opinion but I believe the SRTs are better than the QFM in performance and feel, but you always get what you pay for. The SRTs are very good albeit "way" more expensive than QFM.

It was only todays track day and my 70k trip home that reafirmed how good the SRT are. I was dubious early days but my pads from here on in will be Bendix SRT.

On the back straight National Circuit I was running 200kph and dropping down to 80kph for the hairpin, but only banged the brakes at 100 metres juuussst to see what would happen. All solid and felt fine.

The QFM product will definately do the trick for sure and less cleaning.

I'm not sure of your T N T experience or track experience Brad. Mine is track day one and strip nothing. But I can quite honestly say that the drags have never been my biggest interest. Touring cars and track work have.

My main interest will always be on the track I suspect and I have a sneaking suspicion that is where the interest lies with the Ford guys. After one day out there I cant wait to do it again.

But, ask away. I'm sure there would still be some interested.

CalaisRider
15-05-2010, 07:22 PM
:)

Well yup sure thing you get what you pay for. My diff does have a leak at the front seal, not just venting and overflow issues.

The car did 125 kilometres of track work, plus 140k return trip to QR and home again on top of that.

I use Mainlube heavyweight diff oil. Some may disagree but I rekken that is the reason the diff and Harrop Tru Track survived the whole day at full bore.

PS
I'm sure the Ford blokes would love to play drags and T&T with us. Adam, honestly mate, just because you haven't run the strip before doesn't mean you should shut down or be so negative to the proposal that Brad puts forward. Same as me sailing away from you when approachin on the track yesterday - yeh I awaited you to catch up, then went hard and the gap grew exponentially - which surprised me somewhat, but... I don't understand why you personally have to have done a particular motorsport for it to happen on BC.

Hells bells, this started out as me going to T&T on a particular date as a definate. Those that wanna go do, those that don't don't - simple formula eh... No probs either way!!!

Pete

Oh look FFS.

All I did was post my personal opinion on a great day yesterday and the fact that becaue I hadn't done either it was very easy for me to state that track was indeed my favourite. Hell, I'd like to certainly like to do the strip and I certainly wasn't playing down Brad's idea. I just got the impression that's probably what they are more into. Excuse me for having an opinion.

I am most certainly not being negative towards anything. I didn't say because I haven't done it that we cant do it here. Am I really that transparent to you......

As for sailing away for me and you blew out a massive gap. I was pretty sure your car had a cam in it Pete. Mine does not. I have also not done track before.

But planning on grabbing one of Hiro by next time I hit the track. Agreed it would have been awesome - definitely a different perspective from inside the car!

just from listening to the video and hearing you shift it looks like you have it downpat mate, burp shifting, grabbing another gear for a few seconds then burp shift down, sounds good :), but it needs to be louder :p hehehe

Yayy another adict to the circuit!!!! We gotta get out there more often together Darren.

I was surprised how quick your car was on the front straight. It performed flawlessly all day from what i saw.

I'm sure guru Garry can get you onto those quicker lines in the curves. I'm not super quick, but his relentless coaching on the lines did pay off big time last Friday, I was quite comfy and well within my limits, but still circulating at a reasonable pace. A lap time of 1:04.8732 on the Clubman Circuit was okay on 20" wheels and road tyres. There was certainly a tad and a bit more in the VE on the curves but I saw no need to push and maybe break something nor overstressing my heart and adrenaline levels LOL...

An awesomme day of which I hope there are many more club events along this line - nice work to the organisers...

Pete

Well, a little surprise for you.

Next one should be at Lakeside. Keep your eyes open for any info.

oh yeah I'm hooked Pete :D And definitely would love the opportunity to try & keep up with that 7000+rpm Calais bullet again lol :p The day wouldn't have been half as much fun without the great company.

Although, unfortunately the frequency of my participation will be somewhat limited by budget. As you know well, it's fairly hard on the componentry. Tyres survived surprisingly well, but still.... I think Fridays activities reduced the front tyres life by about 10,000km

Yeah mate, the VH performed beyond my expectations for the entire day. Reality is, it's a 28 year old car, so I really didn't have any idea of what to expect! But I was so impressed how good it felt and that it wasn't completely outclassed by it's more modern stablemates. In fact I felt the car had a lot more speed in it, biggest limitation on the day was my own limited track skills, which was improving as the day progressed, but still has a long way to go! Gary's advice was golden, as was following your racing lines (when I could actually keep your car in sight!).

And yeah the car performed flawlessly - well apart from the couple of laps of missfiring when the fuel tank dropped below half. Not sure what I can do about that in the future apart from keeping the tank above half or fitting a larger external swirl pot. It would seem the intank swirlpot isn't large enough.... Will have to see how it goes with when I fit the 80L tank.

Yeh darren, each car has its ideocincracies and shit happens. Mine goes into full shutdown at the back straight hairpin after lap 5 on the National Circuit and has for the past three years. It's all normal, duno why.

Ha, Darren I truely do love the sound the Luxo gets up as approaching 7,000 rpm.

Mate lets face it, I had almost a half a lap lead on you when the VE shutdown on the National Circuit. As far as I'm concerned you beat me on that one.

On behalf of the XR6 & XR8 Club,

I would like to thank everyone from the Brisbane Commodore Car Club who attended the track day at Queensland Raceways last Friday. It was great to have the two clubs together for a day of motorsport like this, after all this is what car clubbing is all about.

Your club has some awesome cars that attended and was great to see members from both clubs taking an interest in what was happening on the track and off the track in both clubs.

The club looks forward to catching up with you guys and girls on the 20th of June for the combined cruise and at our next track day at Lakeside in September.

Once again thanks for attending.

Regards

Shane,
Vice President
XR6 & XR8 Club of Qld.

Thanks Shane , personally I had a great day and having attended the Ipswich 300 with your crew I have to compliment all your guys as they are professional in what they do and make a lot of other so called clubs look worse than they really are ... Look forward to the cruise
