i dont think u will need a custom tail shaft.

i think all u would need to do is take the front half off a VS man tail shaft and the rear half off a vn.

should work.

The tailshaft I have has a donut thing on so im assuming its from a VX or maybe VT? I haven't measured the front but im pretty sure if i took the front piece and put a VN one onto it it'd be too long. But I will do some measurements tommorow.

Thank you

Hey thanks, I might take you up on that offer for the VR one. Where abouts are you located?

Cheers.

mate that's a strange one.
never seen anyone do the conversion into an earlier model, but yeah just assumed it would be a fairly straight fit. As you mentioned the VS was released with a getrag, and floor pans didn't change a lot until VT

sorry I can't help, good luck!

If its a VS Getrag then it will need modification as the handbrake cables and handle under the car does sit in differant spots to the VP/VR and depending on the model VS will also depend on this problem.

Even things like exhaust mounting brackets changed during the VS production life...

Question? do you have a getrag bellhousing or a T5 bellhousing as I am led to beleve they are differant depths...which depending on where the hanbrake is hitting might be the root of the prob...

Pics maybe? If the wags was running and i wasnt starting work on Thurs i would come up and have a peek...

It would be from a VT if anything cause the VX's where all LS1's....

It pob has a VT shifter on it and thats all you should need to change as the if the Bellhousing is right for the box it should fit. Maybe if someone on here as a VP shifter we could try that. There should be no reason it doesnt fit as along as the above mentioned is right.

Well theres no going back now I guess...

Just sent the flywheel to get machined up and ordered a spigot bush, throwout bearing and a soft button clutch so there goes an easy $1k+ :(

I'm also lifting the motor out friday and putting a new rear main and sump gasket in as its leaking a little and I don't want it stuffing the clutch. Shouldnt be cause the motor is only a few 1000k's old but oh well. Rather do it now and get it over and done with.

Well its off getting a custom tailshaft made up, custom fabricated gearbox mount and custom shifter linkages. I'm so not impressed with all the work needed for a so called 'conversion' a cheap setup has turned very expensive quickly, but we learn from our mistakes I guess.

Braided Clutch line and a new correct master clutch cyclinder is on order also. Heres to hoping it goes smoothly!!!

yeah in hindsight you probably could have picked up a T56 conversion or a Tremac TKO for around the same money as you've spent. But yeah that's cars for ya, I've taken the long, expensive route on more than one occasion

Good luck with it all, hope it's all downhill from here.

nah slush boxes are only good for straight lining :D

Strati have you spoken to the likes of Mal Wood, Dellow or Castlemaine Rod Shop about the master cylinder setup ? Maybe they might have a cable conversion.. I know Mal Wood in Warwick does a cable conversion for the T56, so it fits straight into an early girl

still no good!
autos have no clutch control, no throttle on downshift etc. Pull an auto back a gear hot into a corner and you risk locking up the back end. Manual you can control the power delivery with the clutch and/or matching rpm on the downshift by stepping the throttle avoiding locking rear wheels. And can't stop the stupid thing from dropping into an insanely low gear (at least on a standard box) when you mash the throttle on the 700's, you end up going backwards followed by the usual sloppy turboslushmatic drawn out upchange - horrible boxes!!!

Autos for the 1/4 mile and mundane city driving, manuals for the corners! :D

Yeah I have to agree turbo 700's are a piece of junk. (as my near new reco one blew up after 3-4000k's).

My favourite are the T350's or T400's, transbraked full manuals with all the gear they are wicked boxes. experienced a couple 2 spd glides and they are very cool too.

I tried mal wood but wasn't any help, i think it was in the too hard basket (i can easily understand why).

Ill start a new thread see if anyone knows. cheers all!.

haha drive it like i drove my VN, auto with stage 2 shift kit, corvette servo, kevlar band, bigger valves, drop it back a gear to slow down was easy just use abit of throttle to keep the rev up, its an art but its do able :p hahaha :D
